Lessons Learned: Summer 2022 Art Fairs

My first series of art fairs has been so vital to my growth as an artist.  This year, I set up outdoor art shows at a variety of venues including juried art fairs.

Each show had a different audience.  Shows with a general/broad audience can be great, especially if they are local!

I met so many fun people at Bridgefest in Houghton (where I live) and I sold a LOT of prints, especially those of "Awestruck". Which was great, because I painted "Awestruck" specifically for Bridgefest and to celebrate the National Historic Landmark designation of our local lift bridge.

On the other hand, at Art on the Rocks - a juried art festival - I sold several original art pieces and some prints. I'm so grateful for those original art sales, because those customers really connected to something in the art work.  And that means the world to me.

Some of what I've learned:

1) Grid walls are HEAVY!  But, they are much more affordable and space efficient than other options.

2) Bring sunblock even if the weather is going to be cool.  I got a major sunburn in Marquette at Art on the Rocks.

3) Set up a separate table for wrapping art work.

4) Bring themed art work if appropriate.

5) Plan to have art work all around the house for a few days before and afterward.  I always unpack art work after a show so that I know it's completely dry before putting it away...if I'm not hanging it up on my own walls.

Yes.... I hang my art on my walls.  They make fun conversation pieces and inspire future works.  ;-)
